Zoho Security and Compliance: Certifications, Data Centers and Controls

By Harikrishnan, Founder & Chief Zoho Consultant, Flowpeak · 10+ years in Zoho · Published · Last updated

Zoho security and compliance rests on audited standards: Zoho lists ISO/IEC 27001, 27017, 27018 and 27701 certification and SOC 2 Type 2 for its cloud services, plus a GDPR data processing addendum and a HIPAA BAA on request. Your own settings, such as MFA, roles and data center choice, decide how safe your account actually is.

This guide is for owners, IT leads and compliance officers who must answer one question before signing: is Zoho secure enough for our data? Our short answers cover single points such as ISO 27001 and whether Zoho can read your email. Here we put the whole picture in one place: which certifications Zoho lists and what each covers, how GDPR and HIPAA work in practice, where data is stored, how encryption works, and the admin controls you should switch on. Every claim is checked against Zoho's compliance and security pages as of November 2026.

Is Zoho safe and secure?

Yes, Zoho runs a mature security program, but security is shared. Zoho publishes a security whitepaper describing a formal information security management system, dedicated security and privacy teams, employee background checks, network segmentation, intrusion detection, a bug bounty program and periodic third-party audits.

Zoho also publishes a shared responsibility model. Zoho secures the data centers, infrastructure and applications. You are responsible for strong passwords, multi-factor authentication, who gets access, what data you store and how you share it. Most real-world incidents in any SaaS product start on the customer side, with a reused password or an over-privileged user.

If your question is mainly about privacy, our answer on whether Zoho is safe and can read your emails covers that in two minutes.

Which Zoho security and compliance certifications does Zoho hold?

Zoho's compliance page lists the certifications and reports below. Scope matters: some apply to all Zoho cloud services, others only to named apps or data centers. Verified organization admins can download certificates and reports from the Compliance tab in Zoho Accounts after accepting an online NDA.

Main Zoho certifications and reports, as listed on zoho.com/compliance (November 2026)
StandardWhat it coversScope Zoho states
ISO/IEC 27001Information security management systemAll Zoho cloud services (valid to August 2028)
ISO/IEC 27017Security controls for cloud servicesAll Zoho cloud services
ISO/IEC 27018Protecting personal data in public cloudAll Zoho cloud services
ISO/IEC 27701Privacy information managementAll business units and cloud services

SOC 1 Type 2Controls relevant to financial reportingNamed apps including Books, CRM, Inventory, Payroll
SOC 2 + HIPAA Type 2HIPAA security, privacy and breach requirementsNamed apps including CRM, Desk, Creator, Mail, WorkDrive

Zoho also lists regional items, including Cyber Essentials Plus for its UK office and EU data centers, ENS in Spain, HDS in France for Zoho Creator in EU data centers, GoBD in Germany for Zoho Books, Invoice and Expense, and a Class B certification for its Saudi entity under the NCA cloud controls. Some items show expiry dates, so always check the current validity before you rely on one in an audit.

Is Zoho GDPR and HIPAA compliant?

No vendor can make you compliant; it can only give you the tools and contracts. For GDPR, Zoho says it acts as a data processor for customer data, offers privacy features in its apps, and provides a data processing addendum based on model contractual clauses. An organization admin requests the DPA from Zoho's legal team, stating the data center the account uses.

For HIPAA in the US, Zoho provides a Business Associate Agreement template on request. Zoho's HIPAA page says the BAA defines which Zoho services are covered, that protected health information should only be stored in BAA-covered services, and that customers must mark relevant fields as ePHI, set role-based access and enable MFA. Zoho lists services with HIPAA support, including CRM, Desk, Creator, Books, Mail, WorkDrive, Sign and Zoho One, but check Zoho's current HIPAA page and your signed BAA before storing patient data.

Confirm your own obligations under GDPR, HIPAA, UAE or Saudi data laws with a qualified lawyer. Zoho supplies features and contracts; your configuration and processes complete the picture.

Where is Zoho data stored, and can you choose the data center?

Zoho assigns your account to a data center region based on the country you choose at sign-up. Zoho lists regions in the US, Europe (Amsterdam and Dublin), India, Australia, Japan, Canada, Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Singapore, each with a primary and a secondary site, plus China. UK customers are served from the EU region.

Pick the region deliberately at sign-up, because moving an existing account later is not a simple settings change. Our answer on which Zoho data center to choose and whether you can move covers the trade-offs, including residency rules in the UAE and Saudi Arabia.

Zoho says data in the primary site is replicated to the secondary site in near real time, and that it runs daily incremental and weekly full backups kept for three months.

How does Zoho encrypt data, and can Zoho read my emails?

In transit, Zoho says all connections, including web, API, mobile apps and IMAP, POP and SMTP email clients, use TLS 1.2 or 1.3 with strong ciphers, with perfect forward secrecy and HSTS. At rest, Zoho encrypts sensitive customer data with AES-256 using its own key management service, with master keys stored separately from data keys. Exactly which data is encrypted at rest varies by service, and Zoho publishes a per-service list.

On staff access, Zoho states that technical controls and internal policies prohibit employees from arbitrarily accessing user data, that access follows least privilege and role-based permissions, and that production access is logged and audited. Zoho also states it has no ad-revenue model, which is a common worry for free email users.

Which admin controls should you switch on first?

Zoho's controls only help if you use them. Work through these steps in your first week, then review them every quarter.

  1. Enforce multi-factor authentication for every user. Zoho supports OneAuth push, QR, TOTP, biometrics and YubiKey hardware keys.
  2. Connect single sign-on through SAML if you already use an identity provider. Zoho names ADFS and LDAP-based setups as examples.
  3. Set roles and profiles so each user sees only the records they need, starting with Zoho CRM.
  4. Review audit logs. Zoho says every service logs user update and delete actions.
  5. Restrict exports and bulk deletes to administrators.
  6. Remove leavers on the day they leave and reassign their records.
  7. Mark sensitive fields as ePHI or encrypted fields where the app supports it.
  8. Schedule exports so you hold your own copy of critical data.

Step 3 deserves the most time. A clear role hierarchy and a small number of profiles are easier to audit than one-off sharing rules added under pressure.

Frequently asked questions

Is Zoho a Chinese or Indian company?

Zoho is an Indian-origin company, not a Chinese one. Zoho states it is headquartered in Austin, Texas, with international headquarters in Chennai, India, and that it owns and operates its data centers. Your data is hosted in the region your account was created in.

How do I download Zoho's ISO or SOC reports?

A verified organization admin can sign in to Zoho Accounts, open the Compliance tab and download certificates and reports after accepting Zoho's online NDA.

Does Zoho sign a BAA for every app?

No. Zoho's HIPAA page says not all services are designed for HIPAA and the BAA names the covered services. Request the BAA and keep patient data only in the services it lists.

Is Zoho SOC 2 compliant?

Zoho lists SOC 2 Type 2 for its cloud services, with an audit period running from December to November. Reports usually arrive about three months after each period ends.

What happens to my data if I close my Zoho account?

Zoho says data is removed from the active database at the next six-monthly cleanup after termination, and from backups three months after that. Export everything you need before you close the account.
