Zoho for US businesses: one system across many state rules

American businesses face a mix that few other countries have. Sales tax, paid leave and wage rules are set state by state, and sometimes city by city, while customers, staff and inventory cross state lines every day. A ten-person firm can have remote staff in four states and customers in twenty. That is where tools bought one at a time start to break. Zoho brings CRM, finance, inventory, support and HR onto one platform, with sales tax and leave rules set per state. Professional and consulting firms

Sales tax and invoicing

There is no national sales tax in the US. Each state sets its own rules, and many allow local add-ons. A business can owe tax in a state where it has no office once its sales there pass that state's threshold. Taxability also varies. New York, Massachusetts and Pennsylvania all tax prewritten software accessed remotely, while consulting and custom work are often treated differently. Zoho Books in the US edition lets you add a registration for each state, give items a tax category, attach exemption certificates to customers and calculate tax by address. For complex cases, the Avalara AvaTax integration calculates rates per transaction. Rules change, so confirm your setup with your CPA.

Payroll and HR rules

Federal law sets the floor: minimum wage, overtime for nonexempt workers after 40 hours a week, and time and pay records. States and some cities add paid sick leave, paid family leave programs, pay range rules for job ads and local income taxes. A team with remote staff in several states may follow several sets of leave rules at once. Zoho People can hold a leave policy per location, track attendance and store signed policy documents. Zoho says Zoho Payroll supports all 50 states, with multi-state payroll on its higher plan. Many teams instead pair Zoho People with Gusto, ADP or a similar provider. We connect either option to Zoho Books.
