PST and invoicing in British Columbia

British Columbia charges its own PST alongside GST. The general rate is 7 percent, and it also applies to software bought as a download or used through remote access. Businesses located in BC that sell taxable goods, related services, software or telecom services must register, and sellers outside BC that sell to BC customers may need to register too. If you buy software for use in BC and the seller charges no PST, the law makes you, the buyer, pay it. Short-term accommodation carries 8 percent PST plus MRDT where an area takes part. In Zoho Books we set PST as its own tax, build GST plus PST tax groups, and track PST you owe on purchases. Rules change, so confirm with your accountant.

Payroll and employment rules in British Columbia

BC employers whose BC remuneration passes the provincial exemption amount must register for the Employer Health Tax and file a yearly return. Under BC Employment Standards, pay periods cannot be longer than 16 days, wages are due within 8 days after the period ends, and a pay statement is due every payday. Staff who have worked 90 days get up to 5 days of paid sick leave a year. Vacation pay is at least 4 percent, rising to 6 percent after five years. Teams pair Zoho People with their payroll provider. Zoho People tracks sick leave, vacation balances and hours, and sends clean data to payroll each period.

Tools you probably connect

Yes. We create PST as its own tax and combine it with GST in a tax group, so invoices show both lines. Items that are exempt from PST get their own setting, and your accountant checks the setup before go-live.

Yes. BC requires the buyer to pay PST on software used in BC when the seller does not charge it. We set up Zoho Books so those bills record the PST you owe, ready for your return.
