Alberta business stretches from grain and cattle operations in the south to manufacturers and contractors around Edmonton and resort towns in the Rockies. Many firms here sell into other provinces and hire staff on varied schedules, from harvest crews to hotel teams. That brings two practical questions for a Zoho setup. First, how to invoice cleanly when Alberta has no provincial sales tax but your customers elsewhere may. Second, how to keep pay records that meet Alberta Employment Standards. We set up Zoho Books, Zoho Inventory and Zoho People for Alberta rules first, then add the other provinces you sell into, so one system covers the whole business.

GST-only invoicing and the tourism levy in Alberta

Alberta has no provincial sales tax, so sales to Alberta customers carry GST only. That keeps local invoices simple, but sales into provinces with PST can bring their own registration rules. BC, for example, may require sellers outside BC to register when they sell to BC customers. Hotels, short-term rental hosts and online brokers must register for the Alberta tourism levy, which is collected on temporary accommodation and remitted to Tax and Revenue Administration. The rate rose to 6 percent for bookings made after 31 March 2026, and stays of 28 days or more are not covered. In Zoho Books we set the levy as its own tax on room items. Rules change, so confirm with your accountant.

Pay, vacation and holidays under Alberta rules

Alberta Employment Standards require employers to pay at least monthly and within 10 consecutive days after each pay period ends. Each pay period, staff get a statement of earnings showing hours, regular and overtime rates, itemized earnings including holiday and vacation pay, every deduction, and time taken off in lieu of overtime. Staff get 2 weeks of vacation after a year and 3 weeks after five years, with vacation pay of 4 percent rising to 6 percent. General holiday pay needs 30 workdays with the same employer in the prior 12 months. Teams pair Zoho People with their payroll provider. Zoho People tracks hours, leave and holidays so each pay statement has accurate data.

Tools you probably connect

Alberta firms often ask us to connect Zoho to Shopify or WooCommerce for online sales, to Google Workspace or Microsoft 365, and to farm or fleet tools that export data by CSV or API.
