BambooHR suits US-centered companies that want core HR, time off and performance with BambooHR's own US payroll and benefits add-ons. Zoho People suits teams that need detailed attendance, shifts and leave rules across countries, or already use Zoho apps. This comparison is for owners, HR managers and finance leads at small and mid-sized businesses choosing between Zoho People and BambooHR. You will see how the two products compare on core HR and onboarding, time off, attendance and scheduling, performance reviews, payroll options, integrations and regional fit. We checked each claim against the vendors' own websites and help pages, and we do not quote licence prices because they change and vary by region. We are a Zoho partner, so we have tried to say plainly where BambooHR may be the better choice.

How do Zoho People and BambooHR compare at a glance?

Both cover the core of small-business HR: employee records, time off, onboarding, performance and reporting. The differences show up in attendance depth, payroll options and where your employees are.

Which is better for core HR and onboarding?

Both are capable here, so choose on structure and workflow. Zoho People lets you model legal entities, business units and divisions in one account, set approvals with up to ten levels, and run candidate and employee onboarding flows with offer letters, e-signatures and checklists. If you hire with Zoho Recruit, candidates can be pushed into Zoho People onboarding.

BambooHR's Core plan includes employee records, workflows and approvals, custom reports and dashboards, plus email and offer letter templates, according to its pricing page. BambooHR also includes applicant tracking with a set number of job openings per plan. Both run onboarding from the same employee record that HR keeps afterward, which is what matters most for a small team. Try both with your own HR admin and a real new-hire scenario before you decide.

How do time off and attendance compare?

BambooHR handles time off well for most offices. Its site describes custom policies, a time off calculator for balances and accruals, a Who's Out calendar and mobile requests and approvals. Time tracking and scheduling are sold as add-ons. BambooHR says its time tracking includes a mobile and desktop time clock and automatic overtime calculations for all 50 US states.

Zoho People goes deeper on attendance rules in its paid plans. Its help documents IP and geo restrictions, facial recognition, a kiosk, biometric device integration, shift rotation, overtime policies with daily to yearly limits, and attendance regularization with approval. Leave types support hours or days, several accrual models, sandwich and clubbing rules, and holidays by location or shift. That depth helps manufacturers, support centers and companies with offices in several countries; for a single US office it may be more than you need.

How do performance features compare?

BambooHR's Pro plan, per its pricing page, adds 360 review cycles, 1:1s and performance reporting, and its performance page describes goals, self, manager, peer and skip-level reviews, and pre-built or custom review cycles. That covers what most small teams use.

Zoho People offers appraisal templates with self, manager and multi-rater reviews, KRAs, goals, skill sets, salary hike cycles and rating normalization. Zoho's help says OKRs are on its Premium and Enterprise plans and can feed appraisal cycles. If you want structured calibration or OKRs linked to reviews, Zoho People has more built in. We cover setup in our post on Zoho People performance reviews and OKRs.

What are the payroll options, and which fits your region?

Payroll is often the deciding factor. BambooHR says BambooHR Payroll is designed for US-based employees and handles federal, state and local taxes for them. For staff outside the US, BambooHR lists integrations with local payroll providers in countries such as the UK, Australia and New Zealand, global payroll partners in its marketplace, and an employer of record option. Its benefits administration add-on is also US only.

Zoho Payroll exists in several countries, including India, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, the USA and Canada, according to Zoho. But Zoho's People help says the direct Zoho People to Zoho Payroll integration is currently available only in India and GCC countries. In other countries, you export attendance and leave data to your payroll provider. For US payroll inside Zoho, see our Zoho Payroll USA guide. Confirm tax and filing obligations with your accountant whichever product you choose.

Regional fit goes beyond payroll. A company with a head office in the US and a support team in India or the UAE needs local holiday calendars, local leave types and often biometric or shift-based attendance for the offshore team. Zoho People handles those rules inside one account by location or legal entity. A company with almost everyone in the US may find BambooHR's bundled US payroll and benefits simpler to run day to day.

How do integrations compare?

BambooHR's marketplace lists over 150 integrations, grouped into categories such as payroll, performance, applicant tracking, time tracking and scheduling, learning and benefits administration. If you run a mix of best-of-breed tools, that breadth is useful.

Zoho People's strength is the rest of Zoho. It connects to Zoho Payroll, Zoho Recruit, Zoho Expense, Zoho Projects and Zoho CRM, and Zoho lists third-party connections such as Microsoft Teams and Adobe Sign. If your company already runs Zoho CRM, Zoho Books or Zoho One, employee data and approvals can live in the same ecosystem with fewer connectors to maintain.

Which should you choose, and how can Flowpeak help?

Choose BambooHR if most staff are in the US, you want payroll and benefits from the same vendor, and your attendance needs are simple. Choose Zoho People if you have teams in India or the Gulf, need detailed shifts, attendance or leave rules, or already use Zoho apps. Compare current plans on each vendor's pricing page.

Whichever you trial, run the same five tests in both:

  1. Import twenty real employee records, including part-timers and a manager chain.
  2. Configure your actual leave policy for each country and check three balances by hand.
  3. Submit, approve and cancel a leave request from the mobile app.
  4. Run a short review cycle with one manager and two reviewers.
  5. Export a month of time and leave data in the format your payroll provider needs.

The product that passes these tests with fewer workarounds is usually the right one, whatever the feature lists say.

Frequently asked questions

Does BambooHR Payroll work for employees outside the US?

No. BambooHR says its payroll is designed for US-based employees. For other countries it points to local payroll integrations, global payroll partners and an employer of record option.

Can Zoho People run US payroll on its own?

Zoho People is the HR system, not payroll. Zoho Payroll has a US edition, but Zoho's People help says the direct People to Payroll integration is currently available only in India and GCC countries, so check Zoho's current pages.

Which has better shift scheduling?

Zoho People includes shifts and rotation in its time and attendance plans, and Zoho also offers Zoho Shifts for hourly teams. BambooHR sells shift scheduling as part of a time and attendance add-on.

Is it hard to move from BambooHR to Zoho People?

Employee records, balances and documents can be exported and imported, but leave balances and approval rules need careful mapping. Plan a test import and a parallel month before switching.

Do both have mobile apps?

Yes. Zoho People has iOS and Android apps for leave, time logging and check-in, and BambooHR has a mobile app for time off requests and other employee tasks.
