By Harikrishnan, Founder & Chief Zoho Consultant, Flowpeak · 10+ years in Zoho · Published · Last updated

Zoho Billing suits small and mid-sized subscription businesses that already use Zoho Books or Zoho CRM and want billing, accounting and CRM in one ecosystem. Chargebee is stronger for complex SaaS pricing, wide gateway coverage and a full revenue stack. Recurly is stronger for high-volume consumer subscriptions, payment recovery and app store subscriptions.

This comparison is for SaaS founders, finance leads and subscription operators choosing a billing platform or reviewing the one they have. All three tools handle plans, trials, coupons, invoices, dunning and reporting, so the real differences lie in pricing complexity, payment recovery, revenue recognition, integrations and the ecosystem around each product. We set out where each one is stronger, using the vendors' own pages, and we do not quote prices because they change and differ by region. You will finish with a shortlist and a set of questions to test in a trial.

How do Zoho Billing, Chargebee and Recurly compare at a glance?

The table below summarizes what each vendor documents publicly. Check details against a live demo, because editions and add-on modules change what you actually get.

Where is Zoho Billing stronger?

Zoho Billing's main advantage is that it sits inside the Zoho finance suite. The Zoho Books integration syncs customers, items, invoices, payments, projects, timesheets and taxes in both directions, so your accountant works from the same records your billing team creates. The Zoho CRM integration shows subscriptions on Account and Contact records, lets sales create offline subscriptions and quotes from CRM, and can raise invoices when a deal is won.

It also covers more than subscriptions. Quotes, retainer invoices, one-time invoices, expenses, timesheets and project billing all live in the same app, which suits agencies and service firms that mix retainers with project work. The customer portal supports self-service upgrades, downgrades, pauses and cancellations, and Zoho publishes separate country editions with local tax settings.

  • One vendor for CRM, billing, accounting and analytics if you run Zoho One or Zoho Finance Plus
  • Built-in revenue recognition on supported plans, without a separate product
  • Omnichannel subscription SDKs for iOS and Android apps

Where is Chargebee stronger?

Chargebee is built for SaaS companies whose pricing keeps changing. Its documentation covers usage-based billing by outcomes, credits or prepaid models, entitlements that enforce limits in real time, and dedicated pricing for AI products based on tokens, credits or agent actions. If your packaging changes every quarter, that depth matters.

Its payment coverage is wider than Zoho Billing's. Chargebee states it connects 40+ gateways and 50+ payment methods across 100+ currencies and 150+ countries. It also sells separate modules for CPQ, receivables, retention and RevRec, with RevRec integrations into Salesforce, HubSpot, QuickBooks, Xero and NetSuite. For a company that uses Salesforce or HubSpot as its CRM and NetSuite as its ledger, Chargebee fits that stack more naturally than Zoho Billing.

Where is Recurly stronger?

Recurly focuses on high-volume digital commerce, with named customers in media, streaming and consumer services. Its strength is keeping subscribers paying. It combines smart dunning with card updater technology, tracks voluntary versus involuntary churn, and offers payment orchestration that routes across gateways with real-time failover.

Recurly's gateway list includes Adyen, Worldpay, Checkout.com, Cybersource, Chase, Fiserv, Ebanx and GoCardless, which suits larger merchants with existing acquiring relationships. Its App Management feature brings Apple App Store and Google Play auto-renewing subscriptions into the same view as web subscriptions. The Recurly for Salesforce package syncs accounts, subscriptions, plans and invoices into Salesforce, with some fields editable back to Recurly.

Which one fits your market: USA, Canada, Gulf, UK or India?

Regional fit often comes down to gateways, tax and where your finance team works.

  • USA and Canada: All three are well established. Zoho Billing lists Avalara AvaTax; Chargebee and Recurly list Avalara too. Zoho lists the US and Canada as live markets for its enterprise revenue recognition.
  • UAE and Saudi Arabia: Zoho runs local editions of Zoho Books with VAT and, in Saudi Arabia, ZATCA e-invoicing support, and lists both countries as live for enterprise revenue recognition. With Chargebee or Recurly, confirm how invoices meet local VAT and e-invoicing rules.
  • UK and EU: Zoho Billing documents GoCardless for GBP and EUR collections, and Recurly lists GoCardless as a gateway. Review GDPR terms and data hosting for any vendor.
  • India: Zoho Billing's India edition documents Razorpay. For Chargebee or Recurly, check local gateway and RBI recurring payment support with the vendor.

What should you check before choosing a billing platform?

The common mistake is choosing on the demo of plan setup, which every tool does well. Test the hard cases instead.

  1. Model your three most complex customers, including mid-term upgrades and proration.
  2. Run a failed payment through dunning and check what the customer sees.
  3. Ask your accountant to review deferred revenue entries for one annual contract.
  4. Confirm your gateway is supported in your country edition, not just globally.
  5. Check how subscription data reaches your CRM and ledger, and who maintains that link.
  6. Plan how card tokens migrate from your current gateway without asking customers to re-enter details.

Frequently asked questions

Is Zoho Billing good enough for a SaaS company?

For many early and mid-stage SaaS companies, yes. It supports plans, add-ons, coupons, usage and prepaid billing, dunning, a customer portal and revenue recognition on supported plans. Companies with very complex usage pricing, many gateways or a Salesforce and NetSuite stack often find Chargebee or Recurly a closer fit.

Can Chargebee or Recurly connect to Zoho CRM or Zoho Books?

Chargebee lists a Zoho CRM integration in its marketplace. Neither vendor lists a native Zoho Books integration on its integrations page, so you would rely on Zoho Flow, Zapier-style tools or custom API work. That adds a link to maintain, which is one reason Zoho users often prefer Zoho Billing.

Which platform is best at recovering failed payments?

Recurly and Chargebee both invest heavily in recovery, with smart or ML-based retries, and Recurly adds card updater technology. Zoho Billing offers configurable retries, failure emails and final actions, which covers most SMB needs. If involuntary churn is a major revenue leak at your volume, test recovery features in a trial.

Can I move from Chargebee or Recurly to Zoho Billing?

Yes, but plan it carefully. Export customers, plans, add-ons and active subscriptions, map them to the Zoho Billing catalog, and agree a cut-over date between billing runs. The hardest part is usually moving stored card tokens between gateways, so involve your gateway early and test renewals on a small group first.

Which is cheapest?

We do not quote vendor prices because they vary by edition, region and revenue volume, and they change often. Check each official pricing page for your region, and compare total cost including add-on modules such as revenue recognition, retention or CPQ, plus the effort to integrate with your CRM and ledger.
