Zoho Books vs NetSuite: Which Fits a Growing Company?
By Harikrishnan, Founder & Chief Zoho Consultant, Flowpeak · 10+ years in Zoho · Published · Last updated
Zoho Books suits growing companies with one or a few legal entities that want fast setup, low admin effort and close links to other Zoho apps. NetSuite is the stronger choice when you need multi-subsidiary consolidation with intercompany eliminations, advanced inventory and warehouse control, or deep custom development, and can support a larger, partner-led implementation.

This comparison is for founders, finance directors and operations leads at growing companies who are outgrowing basic accounting and are weighing Zoho Books against Oracle NetSuite. We look at multi-entity accounting, inventory, customisation, implementation effort and local tax support in the USA, Canada, UK, UAE and India. We implement Zoho, so read this knowing that, but we have tried to be fair and say plainly where NetSuite is stronger. Prices are left out because both vendors price by region and configuration.
How do Zoho Books and NetSuite differ for a growing company?
They are different classes of product. Zoho Books is an accounting application that connects to Zoho Inventory, Zoho CRM, Zoho Projects and the wider Zoho suite. NetSuite is a full ERP with financials, inventory, order management and more on one platform, extended through Oracle's SuiteCloud tools.
| Area | Zoho Books | NetSuite |
|---|---|---|
| Multiple legal entities | One organisation per entity; consolidation through reporting tools | OneWorld: subsidiaries in one account with consolidated reporting |
| Intercompany | Recorded manually in each organisation | Intercompany journals and eliminations |
| Inventory | Items and warehouse locations; Zoho Inventory for more depth | Demand planning, lot and serial tracking, cycle counts, WMS |
| Customisation | Custom fields, custom modules, workflow rules, Deluge functions | SuiteBuilder, SuiteFlow, SuiteScript, SuiteTalk APIs |
| Local tax tools | Country editions with VAT and GST filing in several markets | Location-based tax per subsidiary; localisation varies by country |
| Admin effort | Can be run by a finance lead | Usually needs an internal admin or partner |
How do they handle multiple entities?
This is NetSuite's clearest advantage. With NetSuite OneWorld, Oracle's documentation describes subsidiaries held in one hierarchy within a single account, each with its own base currency and tax nexus. Consolidated reports roll up to a parent's currency with foreign currency translation, and you can post intercompany journals and eliminate intercompany profit.
In Zoho Books, each legal entity is a separate organisation. You can switch between organisations with one login, but there is no native consolidation inside Books. Groups usually consolidate in Zoho Analytics or a third-party consolidation tool, and post intercompany entries manually on both sides.
Zoho ERP, in the regions where Zoho offers it, includes multi-company management with consolidated reports and intercompany transactions. If you have two or three entities in those regions, it is worth evaluating before assuming you need NetSuite.
Which is better for inventory?
Zoho Books tracks inventory items and supports business locations and warehouse locations, with business locations nested up to five levels. Users can be limited to the locations they work in. For batch and serial tracking, composite items, pick lists and shipping, most businesses add Zoho Inventory, which shares data with Books.
NetSuite goes further out of the box. Its inventory pages describe demand-based replenishment using historical and seasonal sales, lot and serial traceability, bin management, matrix items, cycle counting without freezing a location, and a warehouse management module. For multi-site distributors and manufacturers with complex fulfilment, NetSuite is stronger.
How far can you customise each one?
Zoho Books gives you custom fields, custom modules on higher plans, workflow rules, approvals and custom functions written in Deluge, Zoho's scripting language. Zoho Creator and Zoho Flow cover larger apps and integrations. For most SMB processes this is enough, and changes are quick to make.
NetSuite's SuiteCloud platform is deeper. SuiteBuilder changes forms, records and transaction types without code, SuiteFlow builds point-and-click workflows, SuiteScript adds JavaScript business logic, and SuiteTalk provides REST APIs. SuiteAnalytics adds workbook analysis and connectors to external BI tools. That depth suits companies with unusual processes, but it also means more to maintain.
How much implementation effort should you expect?
Zoho Books is designed to be set up by a small team. A typical project covers chart of accounts, taxes, opening balances, bank feeds, templates, roles and integrations. Effort grows with inventory, multiple organisations and custom automation.
NetSuite implementations are larger. Oracle's SuiteSuccess approach offers 17 industry editions with preconfigured roles, dashboards, KPIs and workflows, delivered in phases so the core goes live first. You will still need decisions on subsidiaries, item records, approval flows and data migration, and usually ongoing admin support afterwards.
- Plan for clean master data: customers, vendors, items and open balances.
- Agree the reporting structure before setup, whether that is locations, reporting tags or subsidiaries.
- Budget time for user training; both products fail when people revert to spreadsheets.
What about tax and compliance in each market?
- UK: Zoho Books can submit VAT returns directly to HMRC under Making Tax Digital. NetSuite also serves UK businesses; confirm its MTD approach with Oracle or your partner.
- UAE: Zoho states Zoho Books is an FTA-recognised Digital Tax Integrator that files VAT returns directly with EmaraTax.
- India: Zoho Books pushes GSTR-1 data to the GST portal and supports audit trail for Indian companies. Check NetSuite's Indian localisation in detail if India is a main market.
- USA and Canada: Zoho Books reports sales tax by state and lists an Avalara integration. NetSuite handles multi-nexus tax per subsidiary, which helps groups with entities in several states or countries.
- Saudi Arabia: both vendors address ZATCA e-invoicing; confirm current certification status before you choose.
When is NetSuite the better fit, and when is Zoho Books?
Choose NetSuite if you run several legal entities that need monthly consolidation and eliminations, hold complex multi-site inventory, need custom transaction types or heavy scripting, or expect investors and auditors to require a single ERP across countries.
Choose Zoho Books if you have one or a few entities, want finance to own the system without a dedicated administrator, already use Zoho CRM or Zoho One, or need strong local VAT and GST tools in the UK, UAE or India. Zoho ERP is a middle path in the regions where it is available.

Frequently asked questions
Can Zoho Books consolidate several companies?
Not natively. Each legal entity is a separate Zoho Books organisation. Groups usually build consolidated reports in Zoho Analytics or a dedicated consolidation tool. Zoho ERP includes multi-company management with consolidated reports where it is offered, which suits groups that want to stay in the Zoho ecosystem.
Is NetSuite too much for a small company?
It can be. NetSuite earns its place when you need multi-subsidiary accounting, complex inventory or heavy customisation. A single-entity business with straightforward stock often gets the same results from Zoho Books or Zoho Books with Zoho Inventory, with less setup and less ongoing administration.
Can I move from Zoho Books to NetSuite later?
Yes. Customers, vendors, items, the chart of accounts and opening balances can be exported from Zoho Books and loaded into NetSuite. Keeping clean master data and a sensible account structure in Books makes any later move much easier, whichever system you choose next.
Which is easier to customise without developers?
Zoho Books is quicker for everyday changes such as custom fields, templates, workflow rules and approvals, which a finance lead can manage. NetSuite's SuiteBuilder and SuiteFlow are also no-code, but the platform is larger and most companies rely on an administrator or partner for changes.
Why does this comparison leave out prices?
Both vendors price by region, edition, users and modules, and prices change. Comparing list prices without your configuration would mislead. Check the official Zoho pricing page for your region and request a NetSuite quote, then compare total cost including implementation and support.
