Zoho Inventory Composite Items, Kits and Assemblies Explained

By Harikrishnan, Founder & Chief Zoho Consultant, Flowpeak · 10+ years in Zoho · Published · Last updated

In Zoho Inventory a composite item is a product made of two or more items or services. Choose Assembly when you physically build a finished product, which reduces component stock and adds finished stock. Choose Kit when you sell grouped items without building them, so each component keeps its own stock and the kit gets its own price.

This guide is for e-commerce brands, wholesalers and light manufacturers who sell bundles, gift sets or products built from parts. You will learn the difference between kits and assemblies in Zoho Inventory, how to create a composite item and record assemblies, how serial numbers, batches and costs behave, what tax and channel points to check in the USA, Canada, UK and EU, the Gulf and India, and the setup mistakes that cause stock counts to drift.

What is the difference between a composite item, a kit and an assembly?

Composite item is the umbrella term. Zoho's help documentation splits composite items into two types. Assemblies were previously called bundles, which still confuses people searching older forum posts.

Composite items are always goods. You can include services, such as a labour or packing charge, as components, but an assembly must include at least one inventory item.

How do you create a composite item in Zoho Inventory?

First make sure the feature is on: Composite Items is enabled under the Items settings, and your plan must include it. Zoho's pricing page lists composite items across its plans, but confirm for your region.

  1. Go to Items > Composite Items and click + New.
  2. Enter a name and choose Assembly or Kit.
  3. Add the SKU, unit, category, tax details and images.
  4. Add the component items or services with quantities. You can add another composite item as a component.
  5. Set selling and cost prices, accounts, product codes such as UPC or EAN, and the valuation method, FIFO or Weighted Average.
  6. Set a reorder point and opening stock if needed, then save.

Creating the composite item only defines its structure. It does not add stock. Stock arrives when you record assemblies, adjust stock or record purchases.

If you have many bundles, use import rather than typing them one by one. Zoho Inventory supports importing and exporting composite items as CSV or TSV files. Build the component list in a spreadsheet first, check every component SKU exists, then import a small test batch before loading the full catalogue. This also gives you a clean master file to review when recipes change.

How do assemblies change stock and cost?

You record an assembly from the Composite Items module or the Assemblies module under Inventory. When you assemble ten units, Zoho Inventory reduces each component by its quantity per unit times ten, and adds ten units of the finished item. The Assembly Details report logs each assembly and the components it consumed, which is your audit trail when counts look wrong.

Cost depends on your valuation setting and the component costs. Review the cost price on the composite item against the actual component costs at least when supplier prices change, otherwise margins on bundles drift quietly.

A worked example helps. A gift hamper uses one jar of honey, two packs of tea and one box. If you plan to sell 200 hampers this month, record assemblies in batches as you pack them, say 50 at a time. Each batch drops honey by 50, tea by 100 and boxes by 50, and adds 50 hampers. Your sales team sees real hamper stock, and buyers see component demand early enough to reorder.

Assemblies suit simple builds. If you need routings, work centres, job cards or production scheduling, that is manufacturing rather than assembly. Indian businesses can look at Zoho ERP, which includes those features, and elsewhere a Zoho Creator app is a common way to add them. A good Zoho Inventory implementation partner will tell you early which side of that line you are on.

How do serial numbers, batches and bins work with composite items?

Each item can be tracked by serial number or by batch, not both. Zoho's pricing page lists serial and batch tracking and bin locations on higher plans, so check yours before you design the process.

  • Serial tracking suits electronics and equipment. You can scan or type serial numbers, including on bills and invoices.
  • Batch tracking suits food, cosmetics and pharmaceuticals, with batch reference, manufacturer batch number and dates.
  • Bin tracking cannot be switched off once transactions exist, so decide before go-live.
  • When you record assemblies for tracked components, plan who selects the serials or batches consumed, or traceability breaks.

What should businesses in different markets check?

  • USA: kits are common for Shopify and Amazon bundles. Test how each channel connector maps a bundle SKU before launch. Sales tax on bundles that mix taxable and exempt items varies by state; Avalara AvaTax integrates with Zoho Inventory if rules get complex.
  • Canada: confirm how GST, HST and PST apply when a kit mixes items with different tax treatment.
  • UK and EU: VAT treatment of mixed bundles can depend on whether the supply is single or multiple. Ask your accountant before setting one tax rate on a kit.
  • UAE and Gulf: gift sets and hampers peak around Ramadan and Eid. Assemblies let you pre-build sets and see finished stock before the rush.
  • India: under GST, composite and mixed supplies are taxed differently. Confirm the treatment with your CA and set the tax on the composite item to match.

What mistakes should you avoid with composite items?

  • Using a kit when you physically pack products, so the finished stock is never visible.
  • Using an assembly for a pure promotion, so components are consumed before anything sells.
  • Selling composite items before recording assemblies, which leaves finished stock negative or blocked.
  • Not updating component quantities when the product recipe changes.
  • Deleting items with transactions; Zoho only allows marking them inactive, so plan naming carefully.
  • Leaving reorder points off composite items and components, so nobody notices a component shortage until packing day.

Frequently asked questions

What happened to bundles in Zoho Inventory?

Zoho renamed bundles to assemblies. The function is the same idea: you build a finished product from components, which reduces component stock and increases finished stock. Older guides and forum threads still use the word bundle, so keep that in mind when searching for help.

Can a composite item include another composite item?

Yes. Zoho's help documentation says you can add an existing composite item as a component. This is useful for a gift box that contains a pre-built sub-pack. Keep nesting shallow, because deep structures make cost checks and stock troubleshooting harder for your team.

Can I undo an assembly in Zoho Inventory?

Assemblies are recorded transactions, so treat corrections carefully. Depending on the status and later transactions, you may be able to edit or delete the assembly, or you may need a stock adjustment. Test the correction process in a sandbox or test organisation before go-live.

Should I use Zoho Inventory assemblies or Zoho ERP manufacturing?

Use assemblies when you combine finished components into a product with no routed steps, such as packing hampers or fitting accessories. Look at Zoho ERP manufacturing, currently launched in India, or a Zoho Creator app when you need work centres, job cards, production scheduling or job work with subcontractors.

Do kits work with Shopify and Amazon in Zoho Inventory?

Zoho Inventory integrates with Shopify, Amazon and other channels, but how a kit SKU syncs depends on the connector and your listing setup. Run a test order through each channel and check that every component's stock drops by the right amount.
