Zoho Cliq Team Chat and Bots: A Practical Guide for Growing Teams
By Harikrishnan, Founder & Chief Zoho Consultant, Flowpeak · 10+ years in Zoho · Published · Last updated
Zoho Cliq is Zoho's team chat app, with direct chats, channels, audio and video calls, meetings and file sharing. Its developer platform adds bots, slash commands, message actions, widgets, forms, functions and schedulers, written in Deluge, so alerts and actions from Zoho CRM, Projects, Desk or Books reach people where they already talk.

This guide is for owners, operations managers and IT leads who are choosing a team chat tool or already have Zoho Cliq and want more from it. You will learn what Cliq does out of the box, how it compares with Slack and Microsoft Teams, what each part of the Cliq developer platform is for, which bots are worth building first, and how to roll Cliq out without creating another noisy inbox. Feature names follow Zoho's Cliq pages and developer help as of November 2026. Plans and limits change, so check Zoho's pricing page.
What does Zoho Cliq do for a team?
Cliq gives a team one place for conversations, calls and quick decisions. People chat one to one or in groups, and teams use channels for projects, departments or topics. Zoho lists quick audio calls, group video calls with screen sharing, and online meetings with a collaborative whiteboard.
Day-to-day features include pinned messages, reminders, drag-and-drop file sharing, and forked messages, which split one message into a new chat that keeps the earlier context. Message actions let you turn a chat message into a task, save a file to cloud storage, or tag it to a CRM record. Zoho also lists AI-powered chat summaries.
For most teams the value is in fewer places to check. A sales rep sees a new lead alert, opens the record, and asks a colleague a question without leaving the same window.
External guests can join a Cliq meeting through a shared link, which Zoho says avoids adding them to your organization. Cliq has mobile apps on the major platforms. It is available on its own and as part of Zoho Workplace and Zoho One.
How does Zoho Cliq compare with Slack and Microsoft Teams?
All three cover chat, channels, calls and integrations. The main differences are which suite each belongs to and how you extend it. The table uses each vendor's own feature names.
| Area | Zoho Cliq | Slack | Microsoft Teams |
|---|---|---|---|
| Suite | Zoho Workplace and Zoho One | Owned by Salesforce, sold on its own | Microsoft 365 |
| Calls and meetings | Audio and video calls, meetings, whiteboard | Huddles and clips | Meetings, webinars and town halls |
| Docs in chat | File sharing, save files to cloud storage | Canvas and Lists | Microsoft 365 files and apps |
| No-code automation | Workflow automation and Zoho Flow | Workflow Builder | Workflows |
| Custom tools | Bots, slash commands, message actions, widgets, forms, schedulers in Deluge | Apps built on Slack's platform | Apps and agents |
| External people | Meeting links for guests | Slack Connect | External calling and meetings |
| AI | Chat summaries | Slack AI and Agentforce | Microsoft 365 Copilot |
| App directory | Zoho and third-party integrations | Over 2,600 apps listed | Third-party apps and agents |
The honest rule of thumb: if your company runs on Microsoft 365, Teams is already there. If you rely on Salesforce or a large app ecosystem, Slack is strong. If your business systems are Zoho, Cliq is the one that talks to them with the least extra work. All three price per user with several plans. Check each vendor's pricing page.
What are Cliq bots, slash commands and the other platform tools?
Zoho calls these components internal tools. Each one runs Deluge code, Zoho's scripting language, when it is triggered. Here is what each is for:
- Bots: a conversational interface that answers questions, acts on a user's behalf and sends notifications. Bots have handlers, such as a message handler and an incoming webhook handler.
- Slash commands: type a forward slash and a command name to run a task, such as looking up a CRM deal.
- Message actions: run a function on a specific message, such as turning it into a Zoho Projects task.
- Widgets: custom tabs in Cliq that show data or tools from other apps.
- Forms: collect structured input inside a chat.
- Functions: reusable code that buttons and forms call.
- Schedulers: run code at set times, such as a daily summary.
Bundles of these components can be packaged as extensions. Developers who prefer their own servers can build webhook-based extensions instead of Deluge.
Which Cliq bots and automations are worth building first?
Start with alerts people currently get by email and ignore, and with lookups they do several times a day. Each of these saves a little time many times a day, which is where chat automation pays off. Good first builds include:
- A sales bot that posts won deals and large new leads from Zoho CRM to a sales channel.
- A slash command that returns a customer's open tickets from Zoho Desk.
- A message action that turns a chat message into a task in Zoho Projects.
- A scheduler that posts each morning's overdue tasks to the project channel.
- A finance alert when a large invoice in Zoho Books becomes overdue.
Simple alerts can often be built in Zoho Flow without code. Use Deluge bots and commands when people need to ask questions or take action from the chat. Test each build with a small group for a week before you turn it on for the whole company.
How do you connect Cliq to Zoho CRM, Desk and Projects?
There are three main routes, and most companies use a mix. The first is the ready-made integrations Zoho offers between its own apps, which you switch on in settings and which cover common needs such as notifications and record lookups. The second is Zoho Flow, which listens for an event in one app and posts a message or creates a record in another, without code. The third is custom Deluge code in bots, commands, message actions and schedulers, which you use when people need to ask questions or take action from the chat.
Non-Zoho systems can post into Cliq through a bot's incoming webhook handler. Any tool that sends webhooks, such as a payment, monitoring or form service, can send messages that way.
Whichever route you choose, write down who owns each integration and what channel it posts to. Unowned bots are the main reason chat channels fill with noise a year after launch.
How should you roll out Zoho Cliq?
A chat tool fails when it becomes a second inbox. Set a few rules before you invite everyone.
- Agree what goes in chat, what goes in email and what goes in a task or ticket.
- Create a small set of channels with clear names and owners, and archive the rest.
- Connect one or two business apps first, and limit bot messages to things people must act on.
- Set retention and admin policies with your IT lead before sensitive work moves in.
- Train managers first, because teams copy how their manager uses chat.
- Review channels and bots after the first month, and remove what nobody reads.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a developer to build a Cliq bot?
For simple alerts, no, because Zoho Flow can post messages to Cliq without code. Bots that answer questions or take actions are written in Deluge, so some scripting skill helps.
Can people outside my company join Cliq meetings?
Yes. Zoho lets you share a meeting link so external guests can join without being added to your organization.
Can Zoho Cliq replace Slack for a company that uses Zoho CRM?
For many Zoho-based companies it can, since Cliq connects to Zoho apps directly. Check whether any Slack apps you rely on have an equivalent first.
Is Zoho Cliq included in Zoho Workplace?
Zoho includes Cliq in Zoho Workplace and Zoho One, and also sells it on its own. Check Zoho's current plan pages for what each plan includes.
Can a bot post updates from non-Zoho systems?
Yes. A Cliq bot can have an incoming webhook handler, so any system that sends webhooks can post messages through it.
