How to Hire a Zoho Developer: Models, Skills and Tests

By Harikrishnan, Founder & Chief Zoho Consultant, Flowpeak · 10+ years in Zoho · Published · Last updated

To hire a Zoho developer, first decide whether you need a fixed-scope project or dedicated monthly hours. Then check real skills in Deluge, Zoho Creator and the Zoho REST APIs with a small paid test, confirm working-hour overlap with your team, and agree in writing what the handover includes before any work starts.

This guide is for owners, operations leads and IT managers who need custom Zoho work: a Deluge function, a Zoho Creator app, an integration, or a clean-up of an account someone else built. You will learn how the two common engagement models differ, which skills matter for which job, how to test a developer before you commit, how time-zone overlap works with a remote team in India, and what a proper handover contains. It is written from the buyer's side, so you can use it whether you hire a freelancer, a partner or us.

Fixed-scope project or dedicated monthly hours: which should you choose?

Most Zoho developers for hire offer two models. A fixed-scope project has a written specification, a price and an acceptance test. Dedicated monthly hours give you a set block of developer time each month that you direct through a backlog.

Pick fixed scope when you can describe the result before work starts, such as a Creator app for site inspections or a function that creates a Zoho Books invoice when a deal closes. Pick monthly hours when requests arrive every week and change often, or when you need someone to look after an account that already has a lot of custom code.

Many buyers combine the two: a fixed price for the first build, then a small monthly block for changes after go-live. Ask how unused hours are treated and how much notice either side must give.

Which Deluge, Creator and API skills should a Zoho developer have?

"Zoho developer" covers several different skill sets. Match the person to the job rather than hiring on the word "certified" alone.

  • Deluge: writing functions in Zoho CRM and Zoho Creator, using invokeurl and named Connections instead of pasted tokens, handling errors, and avoiding API calls inside loops.
  • Zoho CRM: workflow rules, Blueprint, custom functions, client scripts, widgets, and knowing when a setting does the job without code.
  • Zoho Creator: forms, reports, pages, workflows, portals, user roles and permissions, and how the app will grow as records increase.
  • APIs and integration: OAuth 2.0, webhooks, Zoho Flow, and Zoho CRM API credits and concurrency limits, which depend on your edition and number of licences.
  • Working habits: comments in code, a change log, testing in a sandbox or developer account, and clear written updates.

Zoho Creator certifications can be checked on Zoho's Creator verification page by entering the code printed on the certificate. For other products, ask for the certificate and the exam name, then test the skill yourself.

How do you test a Zoho developer before you commit?

A portfolio shows what someone says they built. A short paid test shows how they work. Keep it small and close to your real problem.

  1. Write a one-page brief for a real but contained task, for example a function that updates an account field when a related deal is won.
  2. Give access to a Zoho CRM sandbox, on editions that include it, or to a free Zoho CRM Developer Edition account, never your live data.
  3. Ask for the code, a short note on how it handles errors and bulk updates, and a list of the API calls it makes.
  4. Review the result with someone who knows Zoho, or ask a second developer to read it.
  5. Hold a short video call and ask the developer to explain one design choice and one thing they would change.

If you would rather not manage individual developers, you can hire a Zoho developer through a partner team that scopes, builds, tests and documents the work as one fixed project.

How much time-zone overlap do you get with a developer in India?

India Standard Time is UTC+5:30 and has no daylight saving, so the gap with your office changes when your clocks change. Plan meetings around these overlaps:

  • UK: India is 4.5 hours ahead during British Summer Time and 5.5 hours ahead in winter, so your morning is the developer's afternoon.
  • US and Canada Eastern: India is 9.5 hours ahead in summer and 10.5 in winter. Overlap usually means an early morning call for you and an evening call in India.
  • US Pacific: the gap is 12.5 to 13.5 hours, so work runs overnight and handovers happen in writing.
  • UAE: the gap is 1.5 hours all year, and Saudi Arabia is 2.5 hours behind India, so most of the working day overlaps.

For UK and EU companies, a developer working in your Zoho account is processing personal data on your behalf, so ask for a data processing agreement before access is granted. Check where your Zoho data is hosted and whether that matters for your contracts.

What should a good handover include?

The handover decides whether the next person, or your own admin, can maintain the work. Write these items into the contract:

  • All code stored in your Zoho account, with a copy of every function and script in a shared folder.
  • A short document per build: purpose, triggers, fields used, Connections, and the API calls made.
  • Connections and integrations authorised with your company accounts, not the developer's personal login.
  • Test cases and the results, including what happens when data is missing.
  • A recorded walkthrough for your admin and a list of known limits.
  • Removal of the developer's access on the agreed date.

What mistakes do buyers make when hiring a Zoho developer?

  • Hiring for code when the need is a configuration change an admin could make.
  • Giving full admin rights on live data for a small task.
  • Accepting a quote with no acceptance criteria or change request rate.
  • Ignoring API credits, so a nightly sync stops part-way through.
  • Skipping documentation to save money, then paying again later to reverse-engineer the work.

Frequently asked questions

Should I hire a freelance Zoho developer or a partner?

A freelancer can suit a small, well-defined task if you can review the code yourself. A partner suits larger builds or work that touches several Zoho apps, because there is cover when someone is away and a documented process. Whichever you choose, run a paid test and insist on documentation.

What is Deluge and do I need a developer who knows it?

Deluge is Zoho's own scripting language, used in Zoho CRM functions, Zoho Creator apps and several other Zoho products. If your work needs logic beyond workflow rules, such as calculations across modules or calls to another system, the developer must write good Deluge.

How much does it cost to hire a Zoho developer?

It depends on scope, skills and the model you choose. We do not publish a day rate for development; we quote fixed projects and monthly hour blocks in writing after a free scoping call, so you see the full cost before anything starts.

Who owns the code a Zoho developer writes?

Agree this in the contract. The usual position is that code written for you, inside your Zoho account, belongs to you once paid for. Make sure Connections and integration accounts are also in your company's name so nothing breaks when the developer leaves.
