Zoho Deluge scripting: 8 practical examples for Zoho CRM

By Harikrishnan, Founder & Chief Zoho Consultant, Flowpeak · 10+ years in Zoho · Published · Last updated

Deluge is Zoho's scripting language for custom functions in Zoho CRM, Creator, Books and other apps. The most used patterns are fetching a record with zoho.crm.getRecordById, updating it with zoho.crm.updateRecord, searching with zoho.crm.searchRecords, creating related records, and calling outside services with invokeurl. Test every function on sample records and respect API limits.

When workflows and Blueprints are not enough, Deluge fills the gap. These are the patterns we use most on client projects. Field and module names are examples; use the API names from your own account.

Eight common patterns

TaskDeluge example
1. Fetch a recorddeal = zoho.crm.getRecordById("Deals", dealId);
2. Update a fieldzoho.crm.updateRecord("Deals", dealId, {"Stage":"Closed Won"});
3. Search recordsmatches = zoho.crm.searchRecords("Contacts", "(Email:equals:" + email + ")");
4. Create a taskzoho.crm.createRecord("Tasks", {"Subject":"Follow up","Due_Date":today.addDay(2),"What_Id":dealId,"$se_module":"Deals"});
5. Call an external APIresp = invokeurl [ url: "https://api.example.com/rates" type: GET ];
6. Send an emailsendmail [ from: zoho.adminuserid to: "ops@example.com" subject: "New deal won" message: "Deal " + dealId + " was won." ];
7. Work with datesrenewal = deal.get("Closing_Date").toDate().addYear(1);
8. Check before using a valueif (deal.get("Amount") != null) { amount = deal.get("Amount").toDecimal(); }

Good practice

  • Pass the record ID as an argument and fetch the full record inside the function
  • Check for null values before using them
  • Use connections, not hard-coded API keys, for outside services
  • Log with info statements while testing and remove noisy logs after
  • Watch daily API and function execution limits on your Zoho edition
  • Keep functions small and name them clearly

When to call a partner

Deluge is approachable, but scripts that touch many records, run on schedules or call outside systems need careful testing. We write, test and document Deluge functions as part of implementations and integrations. Zoho CRM setup starts from USD 500.
