Tally to Zoho Books migration: how to move without losing your books

By Harikrishnan, Founder & Chief Zoho Consultant, Flowpeak · 10+ years in Zoho · Published · Last updated

To move from Tally to Zoho Books, pick a clean cut-over date (ideally 1 April), bring across masters, opening balances and open invoices, check the trial balance matches, then run both briefly. With Flowpeak this starts from ₹55,000 and takes two to four weeks.

Many Indian businesses move from Tally to Zoho Books to work online, connect with Zoho CRM and Inventory, and give their accountant access without sharing a desktop. The move is straightforward if you plan the cut-over date and opening balances carefully. Here is the approach we use.

Pick the cut-over date first

The cleanest option is to start Zoho Books at the beginning of a financial year (1 April) or a quarter. That way you only need to bring closing balances from Tally, and your GST returns for the previous period stay in Tally. A mid-period switch is possible, but it means migrating transactions for the part of the period already done.

What to export from Tally

  • Chart of accounts and ledger groups
  • Customer and vendor masters with GSTIN, state and addresses
  • Stock items with units, HSN codes and GST rates
  • Trial balance as on the cut-over date
  • Open sales invoices and purchase bills (receivables and payables)
  • Closing stock quantity and value by item and godown

Set up Zoho Books before importing

Enter your organisation GSTIN, enable GST, set the tax rates you use, and create warehouses if you use Zoho Inventory. Map Tally ledger groups to Zoho Books account types, since Zoho uses a slightly different structure.

Import in this order

  • Chart of accounts
  • Customers and vendors
  • Items
  • Opening balances from the trial balance
  • Open invoices and bills, so outstanding amounts match
  • Opening stock

Check before you go live

Compare the Zoho Books trial balance with Tally on the cut-over date. Check that customer and vendor outstanding totals match, and that stock value agrees. Ask your accountant to sign off before the team starts posting new entries.

Run both systems briefly

Keep Tally available, read-only, until your first GST return from Zoho Books has been filed. This gives your accountant a reference for any questions.
