Zoho Inventory vs Zoho Books: do you need both?

You need both if you hold real stock across warehouses, sell on several channels or ship many orders. Zoho Books alone has basic item tracking and is enough for simple stock. Zoho Inventory adds warehouses, batch and serial tracking, picking, packing, shipping and marketplace sync, and it shares data with Books.

Zoho Books is accounting software. You can create items, track quantity on hand and use sales and purchase orders, which is often enough for a small business with a few products in one location. What Books does not aim to do is run warehouse operations or connect to online marketplaces.

Zoho Inventory is an order and stock management app. It handles multiple warehouses and transfers, batch and serial numbers, composite items or kits, reorder points, backorders and drop shipping. It also handles picklists, packages and shipping labels, and it syncs with sales channels such as Shopify and Amazon. It is designed for ecommerce sellers, wholesalers and distributors.

When both apps are used in the same Zoho organisation, they share items, customers, vendors and transactions, so a sales order in Inventory flows into the books without a separate connector. Inventory takes care of operations while Books takes care of the ledger, bank reconciliation and tax. Zoho Inventory has limited accounting of its own, so most businesses that adopt it also run Books.

Zoho Inventory is not an MRP system. It can assemble kits, but it does not do production planning or shop floor control. Manufacturers often need Zoho Creator or a separate tool on top. Also check that marketplace syncs fit your order volume: sync errors with Shopify or WooCommerce are a common support issue, so test them before go-live.

Key points

  • Books alone: basic items, stock quantity, sales and purchase orders
  • Inventory adds: multi-warehouse, batches, serials, kits, pick, pack and ship
  • Inventory syncs with marketplaces such as Shopify and Amazon
  • Both share one database when used in the same Zoho organisation
  • Neither is a full manufacturing or MRP system

Common questions

Can Zoho Books track inventory on its own?

Yes, for simple needs. Books tracks items and stock on hand, but lacks multi-warehouse operations, batch and serial tracking at scale, and shipping workflows.

Does Zoho Inventory replace Zoho Books?

No. Inventory manages stock and orders, but full accounting, bank reconciliation and tax returns stay in Zoho Books.

Is Zoho Inventory free?

There is a free plan at the time of writing, limited to 1 user, 1 location and 50 orders. Most growing sellers need a paid plan.
