How do I fix 'execution limit exceeded' errors in Zoho Creator?

This error means a Deluge script ran more statements, or for longer, than Zoho Creator allows in a single action. The fix is to make the script do less per run: avoid fetching records inside loops, update records in bulk, split large jobs into batches run by schedules, and move heavy processing to Zoho Catalyst or an external service when needed.

Zoho Creator sets limits on how many Deluge statements a script can execute and how long it can run, so one script cannot slow down shared servers. Limits differ by action type and plan, and Zoho publishes them in its Deluge limits help page. The error usually appears after an app grows, because a loop that handled fifty records easily now handles five thousand.

Start by finding the loop. Common causes are a fetch or update inside a for each loop, nested loops over two large collections, and repeated API calls for the same data. Fetch once before the loop and store results in a map. Use criteria to fetch only the records you need. Replace single updates in a loop with fewer, larger operations where Deluge supports it.

If the job is genuinely large, such as recalculating every invoice nightly, split it. A schedule can process a batch of records, mark them as done, and let the next run pick up the rest. For heavy integration or data processing, Zoho Catalyst functions have higher limits and suit background jobs better than form actions.

If you would rather have the scripts reviewed and refactored for you, Flowpeak Consulting can find the slow loops, rewrite them and set up batch processing so the error does not return as your data grows. We also add logging so you can see how close each script runs to its limit.

Key points

  • Find which workflow or function throws the error from the logs.
  • Look for fetch or update statements inside loops.
  • Fetch data once and store it in maps or lists.
  • Split large jobs into batches run by schedules.
  • Move heavy processing to Zoho Catalyst if batching is not enough.

Common questions

Can Zoho raise the execution limit for my app?

Limits are mostly fixed by plan. Higher plans may help a little, but rewriting the script is the real fix.

Why did the error start suddenly?

Usually the data grew. A script that loops over records gets slower as the record count rises.
