Does Zoho Inventory reserve backordered stock automatically when a PO is received?

Partly. In Zoho Inventory, confirmed sales orders commit stock, and items you could not fulfil can be backordered against a purchase order. When the purchase receive is recorded, stock rises and the waiting sales orders can be packed. It does not always lock specific units to specific customers, so check committed stock and process backorders in the order you want them filled.

Zoho Inventory separates stock on hand from stock available for sale. A confirmed sales order commits quantity, which reduces what is available to others. If you do not have enough, you can create a backorder that raises a purchase order to your vendor for the shortfall, keeping a link between the two documents.

When goods arrive and you record the purchase receive, stock on hand increases. The linked sales orders become fulfillable, and you can create packages and shipments. What it will not necessarily do is enforce strict priority across many customers waiting for the same item. If several orders compete, the first one you pack gets the stock.

For tight control, use reports of pending sales orders by item, decide the fill order before packing, and consider workflows that alert the team when a backordered item is received.
